Greek Easter is bigger than Christmas. It’s seen as an important religious time, and people who don’t even usually attend church certainly do so at Easter – more of a time to socialise with the local community.

Hard boiled eggs are made and then dyed red–ready to be gently cracked against with your opponent at the Easter Saturday meal.

Good Friday is a day of mourning and if you’re lucky enough to be here during this period, you’ll hear the mournful chants of the priests from all churches around the country.

The Tomb of Christ is taken out from the church and many people follow the mournful, respectful procession around the area. In big cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki there are several processions representative as to where the churches are.
