Though Greek is generally hard to fathom for foreigners, language surprisingly isn’t too much of a problem for travellers in Greece.

Since Greek is only spoken in Greece, many people have English as their second language, especially the younger generation.

Restaurants, tavernas, bars and coffee shops will all speak English and have their menus in a variety of languages to reflect the international crowd the country attracts.

If you decide to venture off the beaten track (always recommended) to a remote town in Central Greece, Northern Greece or the Peloponnese you might find some of the elderly local population are limited in English, but with gestures and, most importantly a smile, you’ll always get by. And with Greece the home of philoxenia – kindness to strangers – you’ll always get by.
