Royal Botanic Gardens
An urban oasis
One of the finest examples of Victorian-era landscaping in the world, this 38-hectare cornucopia of green rustles with over 10,000 native and introduced plant species. They’re meticulously displayed in a series of collections, centered around an ornamental lake that practically begs for a picnic.
The lake is a remnant of the swamps that once dotted the area, used by the local Wurundjeri people to catch eels. From April to December, Aboriginal Heritage Walks of the Gardens explore the area’s rich Indigenous history. In the warmer months, the Gardens host Moonlight Cinema, an alfresco season of new and cult-status films.
At any time of the year, head up to Guilfoyle's Volcano, a restored 19th-century reservoir offering sweeping skyline views.
Framing the grounds is the 3.8km ‘Tan’, a former horse-exercising track popular with local (and visiting) joggers.
