Sydney Opera House
Australia's architectural diva
Completed in 1973, Sydney’s World Heritage-listed Opera House has a backstory worthy of a Wagner opera. Budget blowouts, lengthy delays and classic political meddling saw its projected four-year construction timeline turn into a 14-year saga. This included the resignation of Danish architect Jørn Utzon in 1966. The ending, however, was triumphant and the building remains Australia’s architectural aria.
Over a million self-cleaning tiles clad its iconic ‘sails’, crowning a variety of performance spaces hosting world-class opera, theatre, dance and concerts. While the exterior is always accessible (and free), catching a show (book in advance) is the best way to experience its innards.
