Art Gallery of NSW
Australian masters, global heavyweights
While Sydney’s main art repository spans the globe, its collection of Australian art shines brightest. Artists represented include Australian impressionist Frederick McCubbin, modernists Sidney Nolan and Albert Tucker, as well as contemporary photographer/filmmaker Tracey Moffatt. Seek out Brett Whiteley’s very Sydney painting The Balcony 2.
The gallery’s cachet of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art is also robust, while its international names include Pissarro and Van Gogh.
Check the website for touring exhibitions and regular special events, which includes Wednesday’s Art After Hours, evening openings complete with DJ-spun tunes and film screenings.
