Parliament House
Australia's power house
The engine room of Australian democracy, Australia’s parliament building delivers political, cultural and architectural intrigue.
The free guided tours (run several times daily; see the website for times) are fascinating, though it’s worth paying $15 for the one-hour Behind the Scenes tour, run when parliament isn’t sitting. When it is sitting, consider catching Question Time (2pm; see website for dates), when government ministers and their opposition rivals battle it out in the House of Representatives.
Built in 1988, the complex itself is richly symbolic, both in its design, use of materials and artworks. The latter include the forecourt’s 196-square-metre indigenous mosaic Possum and Wallaby Dreaming and the Great Hall’s Great Hall Tapestry. Inspired by artist Arthur Boyd’s artwork Untitled (Shoalhaven Landscape), the latter is one of the world’s largest woven artworks.
