Australian War Memorial
Built to commemorate World War I, Canberra’s Moderne-style war memorial honours Australian service people involved in significant conflicts. The names of the country’s war dead surround the memorial’s commemorative courtyard, beyond which lies the magnificent Hall of Memory, a Byzantine-inspired space adorned with mosaics and stained glass by WWI soldier and artist Napier Waller.
Australia’s military history is explored at the centre’s revamped museum, its inventory including military hardware, historic artefacts and art.
If possible, time your visit to catch the moving Last Post Ceremony, held in the commemorative courtyard at 4.45pm daily. To secure a spot, register online.
