Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)
Australia's sporting temple
Host of the 1956 Olympic Games, the 100,024-seater ‘G’ is home to Melbourne's unofficial religion, AFL (Australian Rules Football). The first ‘footy’ match was played on this site in 1858 and catching a game on what, for many, is hallowed ground is as Melbourne as it gets.
Footy season runs from late March to late September and some of the best matches are those between arch rivals Collingwood (The Pies) and Carlton (The Blues). Come summer, sports fans hit the ‘G’ for the cricket, its own highlight being the Boxing Day Test. Tickets to all MCG events can be purchased through Ticketek.
Guided one-hour tours of the stadium run on non-match-days year-round and the building also hosts the state-of-the-art Australian Sports Museum, whose prized collection includes sprinter Cathy Freeman’s Sydney Olympics swift suit.
