Bendigo Art Gallery
World-class art in a Gold Rush town
Gold Rush architecture aside, Bendigo’s other big drawcard is its public art gallery. Founded in 1887, it’s one of Australia’s best regional galleries, with ambitious, progressive programming that draw no shortage of discerning Melburnians up for the day or weekend. This includes blockbuster travelling exhibitions from institutions like the British Museum and V&A.
The permanent collection is worthy in its own right, with 19th-century European works and top-tier Australian artists, both past and present. The gallery makes a sneaky cameo in Margaret Preston’s whimsical painting Winter in Bendigo (Alexandra Fountain).
