Old Government House
Magnificent art in a heritage beauty
The fairest of Queensland’s colonial-era buildings dates from 1862. Built for the state’s first governor, Sir George Bowen, its subtropical twist on the Greek-Revival style is the work of prolific government architect Charles Tiffin.
While the sandstone exterior is undisputedly handsome, its true highlight is the first-floor William Robinson Gallery, named for the prolific Brisbane-born artist. The gallery houses an exceptional collection of the Figurative Expressionist’s work, including paintings, drawings and ceramics.
