Museum of Old and New Art (Mona)
Playful, out-of-the-box exhibitions
Wildly unorthodox Mona has transformed Hobart into one of Australia’s hippest culture hubs. Lovechild of art collector and professional gambler David Walsh, the $75-million waterfront complex is known for its oft bemusing works, among them its infamous Cloaca Professional ‘Poo Machine’.
Mona includes locavore eateries and a cellar door pouring local wines and craft beers, with a dramatic boutique hotel set to open onsite in 2024.
Mona is also behind Tasmania’s two hugely popular arts festivals: Mona Foma in January and Dark Mofo in June.
Museum visits must be booked online in advance.
