Ningaloo Marine Park
World's largest fringe reef
Backing onto Western Australia’s Outback, the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Marine Park claims the world’s largest fringing reef, stretching some 300km along the state’s north coast. It’s a spectacular sight, where topaz waters teem with tropical fish, turtles, dolphins, dugongs, manta rays, humpback whales and gentle whale sharks.
From the gateway towns of Exmouth and Coral Bay, tour operators run a myriad of reef experiences on what is Jinigudera country, from snorkelling and diving to fishing, kayaking and sailing. Exmouth-based Three Islands Whale Shark Dive operates whale-shark dives from late March to early August. Beach bums will love idyllic Turquoise Bay, which offers decent snorkelling for all skill levels.
If exploring on your own, drop into the park’s Milyering Discovery Centre for maps and up-to-date information.
Ningaloo Marine Park lies some 1180km north of Perth.
Air: Learmonth Airport (37km south of Exmouth) is the gateway to Ningaloo, with regular Qantas flights to/from Perth. Major car-rental companies are located at the airport; book vehicles in advance.
Car: From Perth, head north on Indian Ocean Dr (SR60) or the inland Brand Hwy (National Route 1). The routes eventually merge.
