Broome
Melting-pot pearling town
Closer to Jakarta than Sydney, this fabled Kimberley destination is famed for its blood-orange sunsets, turquoise waters and camel-back beach rides.
While Broome’s most famous drawcard is majestic Cable Beach, the town itself has a fascinating bio. An important pearling centre since the 19th century, its heritage combines European, Indigenous, Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Koepanger and Filipino influences. This includes a historic Chinatown and old Japanese, Chinese and Muslim cemeteries. It’s a history brought to vivid life by Broome Historical Walking Tours.
One of Broome’s best-loved (and most fampus) relics is Sun Pictures, an atmospheric outdoor cinema operating since 1916.
Air: Qantas and Virgin Australia fly non-stop to/from Perth year-round. Seasonal non-stop routes include Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Airnorth connects Broome to Kununurra (for Purnululu National Park) and Darwin.
Bus: Integrity coaches run to/from Perth, while Greyhound Australia reach Darwin.
