Broken Hill
Film-famous Outback
On the traditional land of the Wiljakali and Barkindji people, the Outback mining town of Broken Hill plays a significant role in Australian history and lore. The town gave birth to Australia’s union movement, the eight-hour work day and Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP). The latter is now BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company,
Its historic Palace Hotel famously appeared in the Australian film classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Today, it’s a hub for the town’s annual LGBTIA+ Broken Heel Festival.
‘Frontier town’ stereotypes are further subverted by the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, whose notable collection includes works by Australian greats Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Arthur Boyd, Clifton Pugh, Charles Blackman and Broken Hill’s own Pro Hart. Painting classes are run in Pro Hart’s former studio, also in town.
