Cahills Crossing

The world's deadliest waterway

crocodile

This narrow, nail-biting causeway across the East Alligator River in Kakadu National Park is deadly. The only road connection between the park and Arnhem Land, its muddy waters are riddled with saltwater crocodiles, only too happy to feast on anyone hapless enough to enter. The only safe way to cross is in a high-clearance 4WD and only at low tide in the dry season (May-October); check willyweather.com.au for tide times. Those not crossing can watch from a lookout on the west bank.

If you are crossing into Arnhem Land, you’ll need a permit from the Northern Land Council in Jabiru.
