Katoomba
Hub of the Blue Mountains
Katoomba is the Blue Mountains’ main tourist town, luring crowds with its bohemian vibe, art-deco buildings and Three Sisters, a trio of imposing sandstone peaks sacred to the Gundungurra people.
You’ll get an unforgettable view of the mythical siblings from the Echo Point viewing platform on Katoomba’s southern edge. If possible, go early or later in the day when day-trippers are thinner on the ground. From Echo Point, the easy, 0.8km-return Three Sisters Trail leads to more lookouts and a bridge across to the first Sister.
More jaw-dropping views await at Katoomba’s popular Scenic World, 1.7km to the west.
Katoomba lies 102km west of central Sydney.
Car: From Sydney, head west on the M4, tolled between Ashfield and Parramatta. The motorway becomes the Great Western Hwy (A32), which reaches Katoomba.
Train: Commuter trains run frequently from Central Station in Sydney to Katoomba. See timetables here.
