Queen Victoria Building
Australia's grandest shopping arcade
Proclaimed ‘the most beautiful shopping centre in the world’ by Pierre Cardin, the Queen Victoria Building is indeed one of Australia’s most impressive heritage buildings.
Adorned with stained glass windows, mosaics and ornate wrought iron, its Neo-Romanesque magnificence is crowned by copper domes. Completed in 1898, the building was designed by Scottish-born government architect George McRae, whose other grand creations include neighbouring Sydney Town Hall and the Edwardian entrance to Taronga Zoo.
History tours of the building run on Thursday and Saturday afternoons; click here for times and to book. Alternatively, explore on your own; the arcade hosts around 200 boutiques, cafes and eateries. If you’re feeling decadent, take a break at Reign, a dedicated champagne bar on level 1.
