Best budget digs in Banff ($)

This slightly clinical but friendly and spotlessly clean YWCA-run hostel lies just a short walk from downtown.

Dorms cost $28–31, but if there’s two of you a large spartan private room ($68) costs little more (some en-suite). Family rooms are also available. The YWCA’s charitable status means no taxes are payable on rates, making them the lowest in town – by a good margin in summer.

In addition to a huge living room with giant stone fireplace, there’s a large guest kitchen, TV room and laundry facilities. Also here is the Y Mountain Café (Sun–Thurs 7.30am–2pm; Fri & Sat 7.30am–1pm & 6–9pm), which sells good coffees and sandwiches ($6–8) at reasonable prices.
