Grotto Canyon

Canyon pictographs, waterfall & hoodoos: 1.5hr/Easy/4km

This hike provides great bang for buck: it’s easy and several interesting features line the way – but don’t expect any good views.

From Grotto Pond, 12km east of Canmore, this hike starts unpromisingly along a powerline, but soon cuts into the woods to Grotto Canyon.

There’s no formal trail but the way up the tight, steep-sided canyon is clear enough; look for pictographs around 300m into the canyon – on the left at about head-height at one of its narrowest points. Another 100m or so into the canyon is an impressive little waterfall.

Beyond this the valley opens up, passing a cave and some hoodoos – give yourself extra time for these – perhaps another hour.

Return to the start back along the canyon floor.

In winter the canyon is accessible with ice spikes. Transport from Banff and gear for the hike is offered by Banff Adventures Unlimited.
