Sunshine Meadows
Easy access to alpine meadows on the Continental Divide
A beautiful and unusually large tract of alpine grassland straddling the Continental Divide at 2160m, Sunshine Meadows is a stunning summer hiking spot. It spreads out from a the ski resort buildings of Sunshine Village, to which a summer shuttle-bus runs.
From here hikers can explore wild-flower meadows and high-alpine hiking on a few connecting trails: The free sketch map from the Sunshine Meadows Nature Centre shows two major trails – to Healy Pass and to Mount Assiniboine (both major hikes) – and a superb little loop that uses the first sections of each to connect four viewpoints and three lakes for a 9–14km hike (allow at least 3 hours).
You can also access the area by walking up from the ski area parking lot in the valley but it’s an arduous 6km gravel road, so the shuttle bus is a better option.
