Tunnel Mountain
Best hike from downtown for views: 2hrs/Moderate/5km
Though a bit of a minnow compared to surrounding peaks, the isolated position of Tunnel Mountain (1,692m) gives it a superb vantage point for 360º views of the Bow Valley and Banff below you. Take a map of the area to identify local landmarks and surrounding peaks.
The trail involves 260m of elevation gain, follows a series of steep but well-maintained switchbacks, and can be icy in the spring and fall.
The trailhead, with plenty of parking, is on St. Julien Road near the Banff Centre. The round trip from here to the summit takes about 2hrs; allow 3hrs from downtown.
