Hike Fernie

Fernie's focus has never really been hiking, but rather Mountain Biking, with trails heading out of town in every direction.

That said, some of these biking trails are also of interest to hikers: Castle Mountain is a good hike with plenty of valley views.

Meanwhile Island Lake Lodge maintain a network of easy trails for day hikes (which can usefully be combined with food and drink on a pleasant lodge verandah), but it's also the terminus of Heiko's Trail a multi-day trail built single-handedly by a legendary local outdoorsman.

There are a few good trails up at Fernie Alpine Resort too, particularly several fairly demanding day hikes above the tree-line that can be accessed by a brisk chairlift ride.

Castle Mountain

Landmark peak with excellent trails: 2-3hrs/hard/7.5km

Fernie Alpine Resort

World-class skiing & great mountain biking

Island Lake Lodge

Catskiing lodge ($$$) in winter, hiking retreat in summer.
