Walkers Reserve
Hiking with coastal views
On the site of an old sand quarry, this regeneration project offers an opportunity for self-guided and guided walks, a guided jeep tour, or more specialised beekeeping or birdwatching tours.
The reserve offers a vegetated dunescape on the East Coast, interspersed with several ponds, and a stretch of beach. It makes for a pleasant hike, if hot, as there’s scarcely any shade – take plenty of water.
Hike up to the viewpoint, which overlooks the entire property, including the pounding surf. Then drop down to the main pond (pictured) – favoured by migratory birds – and choose your route back.
The trails are well signposted, but with no additional information either on the map or on information boards, you may get more out of a guided tour, on which you can learn about the various projects that are being carried out to transform the area.
Mon–Fri 8am-3pm, Sat & Sun 8am–2pm for self-guided walks
See website for the schedule for jeep (1hr), guided walking (2.5hr) and bi-weekly birdwatching (2hr) or beekeeping (2hr) tours.
