Motu

Tiny islands that delight

There are 15 motu (small islands) in Aitutaki lagoon that are an absolute joy to visit.

One-Foot Island

Your introduction is likely to be a lagoon cruise. Most such cruises stick to the eastern side of the lagoon and a visit to One-Foot Island (Tapuaetai) is a highlight. A look at the image below will confirm why the motu was nicknamed One-Foot.

One Foot Island Aitutaki

Looking back towards the camera from the heel, you’ll note a sandy ‘island’ that is only just above sea level. Dependent on conditions, it’s possible to walk through thigh-to-waist deep water between the two. This is an absolute highlight (see image below).

Honeymoon Island

Teking Cruise also visits Maina & Honeymoon Islands at the southwest corner of the lagoon. Honeymoon is where the kite-boarders come to play and an absolute stunner.

We suggest that once you’ve done your introductory cruise and have a feel for things, that you give yourself at least one more day to take a taxi boat out to the motu of your choice for some relaxing island time. Discuss your options with the operator – and consider taking snorkelling gear.
