Birdwatching
Takitumu Conservation Area
The Takitumu Conservation Area, on the southeastern side of Rarotonga, covers 155 hectares and has played a major role in protecting one of the world’s rarest landbirds, the Rarotongan flycatcher or kakerori (Pomarea dimidiata). Also known as the Rarotonga monarch, the kakerori (see images) goes through sequential changes in plumage - its orange to orange-grey plumage changes to pure grey when maturity is reached after four years.
The Conservation Area also provides birdwatchers with a chance to see and hear other native birdlife, including the unique i’oi (Rarotonga starling) and kukupa (fruit dove).
If you’re interested in visiting, head to the Rarotonga Visitor Centre in Avarua to ask about local guides.
