Tkalčićeva ulica
Sociable 19th-century street
Snaking its way gently uphill from the main Trg bana Jelačića, the pedestrianised Tkalčićeva ulica is the best-preserved of Zagreb’s 19th-century streets.
It is also a key location in the city’s social life, with its quaint rows of pastel-coloured houses occupied by a string of cafes, restaurants and fast-food bars.
While much on offer in these establishments has been internationalised, the street remains a great introduction to the Croatian lifestyle – especially the importance of spending quality time with one’s coffee, gossiping with friends, or simply watching the endless stream of strollers.
