The Dominican Monastery
Peaceful spot with wonderful art
One of the most tranquil spots in Dubrovnik’s Old Town is the fourteenth-century Dominican Monastery (Dominikanski samostan), home to a meditation-inducing cloister filled with orange trees and palms.
The monastery also houses a small but spectacular museum, containing canvases painted by artists active in the city during the sixteenth-century.
Prime among Dubrovnik’s old masters is Nikola Božidarević, whose altarpieces combine the religious wonder of the Gothic period with a more realistic, Renaissance-inspired approach to landscape detail and portraiture. Baroque pictures in the collection include an imposing St Blaise with Mary Magdalene by Titian.
