Trsteno Garden

A slope-hugging settlement 13km northwest of Dubrovnik, Trsteno became famous as the rural retreat of sixteenth-century Dubrovnik noble Ivan Gučetić, who built a modest villa overlooking the shore and invited friends round to marvel at his Renaissance gardens.

Now belonging to the Croatian Academy of Sciences, the site has been expanded to form an extensive arboretum stocked with plants and shrubs from all over the world. Preserving their original Renaissance layout at the centre of the arboretum are Gučetić’s original gardens, where a well-stocked fishpond overlooked by a statue of Neptune provides a central focal point.

Several scenes of fantasy series Game of Thrones were filmed beside the gardens’ sea-facing parapet, making it a popular pilgrimage destination for fans.
