Veliki Tabor
Classic castle
With bulging brightly-painted towers emerging from a verdant hilltop, Veiki Tabor looks a bit like the kind of castle you might see in a children’s colouring book.
The castle was built in various stages between the thirteenth and sixteenth-centuries, and is a wonderful example of a change-over in architectural styles, with the late-Gothic towers and turrets of the exterior hiding a beautiful Renaissance arcaded courtyard.
Inside
Museum galleries inside display a wealth of weaponry and furnishings. Pride of place is occupied by the castle’s huge ceramic ovens, their tiles decorated with mythical beasts in relief.
One room is devoted to the tale of Veronica of Desnica, the local maid who was secretly married to castle owner Hermann of Celje’s son Friedrich. The disapproving Hermann had Friedrich locked up and Veronica murdered, drowning her in a barrel of water and then bricking up her remains in one of the castle towers. Her ghost, it is said, still stalks the castle corridors.
