Monument to the People of Moslavina
Avant-garde Partisan memorial
Certainly one of the most arresting works by sculptor Dušan Džamonija (1928-2009), the Monument to the People of Moslavina is one of the outstanding examples of the use of uncompromising abstract styles in the construction of Yugoslavia’s World War II memorials.
It was unveiled in 1967 to commemorate partisan activity in the Moslavina hills, in particular the partisan hospital located near the village of Podgarić.
Consisting of a sun-like symbol of reflective metal plates, and huge irregular wings representing freedom, the monument is approached along a ceremonial path lined with landscaped grassy hummocks.
The monument stands just above the village of Podgarić, 16km east of the Popovača exit of the A3 Zagreb-Belgrade motorway.
