Kamačnik
Gorge nature trail
In the heart of the green and mountainous Gorski Kotar, midway between Zagreb and Rijeka, the Kamačnik Gorge is one of Croatia’s most attractive and enjoyable nature trails.
It runs for 3-4km up a wooded defile carved by the Kamačnik stream, a water course which emerges from a cliff-face spring at the upper end of the trail. The trail forges its way through dense thickets of yew and beech, crisscrossing the river via a succession of wooden bridges at the gorge’s narrowest points.
Practicalities
Kamačnik is a popular excursion for Croatian folk, especially at weekends, when the narrow path can get a bit crowded. Early parts of the path are rocky and slippery, so appropriate footwear should be worn. It’s difficult to miss the Kamačnik restaurant at the start of the trail, with an outdoor grill and tables scattered on either side of the footpath.
