Vučedol Culture Museum
Unearthing an ancient culture
Jutting out of a hillside at Vučedol, on the Danube riverbank some 5km southeast of Vukovar, the angular red-brick Museum of the Vučedol Culture is one of the most striking contemporary attractions that Croatia has to offer.
It celebrates the so-called Vučedol Culture, an agriculturally sophisticated copper-smelting civilization which grew up on the banks of the Danube between 3300 and 2300 BC.
Archeologists gave the name Vučedol to this epoch in European history after unearthing a stockaded hut settlement at this very spot.
The museum offers an engaging mixture of history and spectacle, with vivaciously decorated pottery vying for attention with recreated dwellings, computer-animated scenes of village life and a veritable fashion-show of replica Vučedol-era garments.
Many of the pots bear pictograms which are thought to represent the positions of the constellations and the passing of the seasons, displaying a sophisticated level of astronomical knowledge.
