Pula Arena
Impressive Roman amphitheatre
Dominating the skyline at the northern approaches to the city centre, Pula’s imposing Arena is the sixth-largest surviving Roman amphitheatre in the world.
It remains in impressively good condition – sixteenth-century plans to dismantle it and move the stones to Venice were scotched by a local politician. Its three tiers of arches are mesmerising in their proportioned beauty.
The amphitheatre is best seen from inside, although you can also walk the outside circuit of the amphitheatre without paying the entry price.
The basement level is where gladiators and animals would have been kept, shedding harsh light on the level of violence with which arena-going public was entertained.
The Arena is still in use as a venue, hosting concerts in summer as well as the Pula Film Festival when prizes are given to the best domestic films.
