Krk
Accessible & rewarding island
Joint largest of the Adriatic islands (it’s exactly equal in size to Cres), Krk is also one of the most accessible, thanks to the road bridge that connects it to the mainland southeast of Rijeka. Krk Town is one of the Adriatic’s most engaging historical centres, while Baška towards the south of the island sits beside a magnificent curve of beach.
Krk Town
Surrounded by significant stretches of medieval wall punctuated by an impressive handful of barrel-shaped towers, Krk Town’s pedestrianized centre offers a tightly-knit web of alleys and piazzas. The twelfth-century Cathedral of the Assumption was built on the site of a Roman bathhouse and still contains a row of classical Roman columns. Next door, the romanesque Church of St Quirinus has a fascinating collection of church art in its treasury.
A sequence of shingle and rocky beach areas stretch east from the Old Town; ten-minutes walk to the west, there is a good pebble beach in front of the Ježevac campsite.
