Dunav, Ilok
The spice of the southeast (l,d; €€)

The southeastern corner of Croatia is famous for its fish stews and its white wine, and the restaurant of the Hotel Dunav in Ilok is one of the best places to try them. Cauldrons of fiš paprikaš (freshwater fish cooked up with lashings of paprika) are served up on an outdoor terrace on the grassy shores of the Danube, with beachside bathers in the Serbian town of Bačka Palanka clearly audible on the opposite bank.
There’s also a full menu of grilled meats and some very tempting desserts. Wash it all down with a carafe of the local Traminac wine.
