Dolac market, Zagreb
Fresh food riot
It’s increasingly rare to find a bustling food market right in the centre of a European capital, but Dolac, just up the steps from Zagreb’s main square, remains crucial to local shopping habits and looks set to survive for many centuries more.
It’s the city’s main source of fresh fruit and veg, and although the choice is increasingly global, there is a significant emphasis on local or regional produce, as well as the changing seasons. Asparagus and berries mark the passage of spring, while paprika, pumpkins and mushrooms take over in the autumn.
There’s an indoor fish market off to one side, and more indoor stalls selling sausages, cheeses, honeys and deli products in a downstairs hall.
