Diocletian’s Palace Basement
Split’s underground history
One of the best ways to get to grips with the structure of Diocletian’s Palace is by visiting the Palace Basement, a complex of empty halls that mirror exactly the layout of the imperial chambers above. Bearing in mind that the imperial chambers themselves have been tampered with and rebuilt so many times over the centuries, the basement is our best surviving record of how they might have looked.
With its beautiful arched passageways fashioned from antique stone, the location exudes a strong sense of atmosphere. And there’s something appropriate about the fact that the basement of Diocletian’s reception room served, almost two millennia later, as the stage set for a certain Daenerys’s audience chamber in Game of Thrones.
