Imotski
Spellbinding lakes
Ninety kilometres southeast of Split, Imotski sits above a fertile valley in the midst of the stark uplands of inland Dalmatia. It is famed for two spectacular geological features, the Blue Lake and the Red Lake, both karstic sink-holes formed by seeping water over thousands of years.
Blue Lake
Nearest to the town centre is the Blue Lake (Modro Jezero), a stretch of water lying at the bottom of a cliff-lined depression. The depression is between 250 to 400 metre deep depending on the water level, which rises and sinks according to season and rainfall. In especially dry summers the lake dries up completely, and a ceremonial football match is played on the lake bed. Footpaths wind their way down into the depression; if there is water in the lake you can take a swim, making this one of the most unusual inland beaches in Europe.
Red Lake
A little further west is the Red Lake (Crveno jezero) a smaller version of the Blue Lake which takes its name from the ruddy hues of the surrounding rock.
