Orson Welles Statue

The man with the hat

Dominating a piazza behind the Joker shopping mall os arguably Spit’s most unexpected monument: a state to American actor and director Orson Welles.

Unveiled in 2007, the statue is the work of Welles’s long-term partner, the Croatian sculptor Oja Kodar.

It commemorates a man who had a deep love for the Dalmatian coast: Welles stayed in Split on several occasions, filmed the (never finished) maritime thriller The Deep off the coast of Hvar, and owned a villa in Primošten between Split and Šibenik.
