Croatian Maritime Museum
From triremes to torpedoes
Housed in a pavilion within the Venetian fortress of Gripe, just up the hill from the Old Town to the east, the Croatian Maritime Museum (Hrvatski pomorski muzej) contains an engrossing collection of maritime paraphernalia and model ships.
There’s a colourful array of naval uniforms, mastheads and flags throughout the ages, and an extensive round-up of the city’s shipbuilding traditions.
The Yugoslav and Croatian navies get thorough coverage, and there’s also an original example of one of the world’s first ever working torpedoes, designed and tested by Bolton-born engineer Robert Whitehead in Rijeka in 1866.
