Stari Mlin, Dalj
Spicy Slavonian cooking (l,d; €€)
This restaurant on the banks of the Danube in the village of Dalj makes for a worthwhile trip out from Osijek. The key specialities that people come out here to sample are paprikaš and perkelt (hot, paprika-flavoured stews featuring big chunks of local river-fish), cooked in metal pots over an open fire.
They also cater for less spicy tastes, with the customary Croatian repertoire of grilled and pan-fried meats accompanied by a serviceable range of pizzas (although even these possess a bit of regional character: “Slavonska pizza” comes with local paprika-heavy kulen salami).
It’s a good place to sample Slavonian wines, such as the refreshing dry-white Graševina and light red Frankovka from the local Erdut winery.
Stari Mlin is on the waterfront at ul. Braće Radića 23 in Dalj. Dalj lies 25km northeast of Osijek on the road to the frontier post at Erdut.
