The City Walls
Venetian bastions
A great way to get a feeling for the layout of the town is to stroll the stretch of City Walls on the northeastern side of the peninsula.
This is the longest surviving stretch of a defensive system that was built in the sixteenth century to keep the city safe from Ottoman attacks, and now offers stunning views across the Old Town’s harbour.
Topped by a broad path edged by stretches of greenery, it’s both an engrossing history lesson and a raised city park. An outstanding example of Venetian fortress architecture, Zadar’s walls were placed under UNESCO protection in 2017.
The walls are accessible from various points on the northeastern side of the Old Town.
