Sea Organ & Greeting to the Sun
Sounds & lights
Located on the peninsula’s southwestern tip, Zadar’s Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun are wonderful examples of how the public space of a city can be transformed by installations that combine creativity and play.
The Sea Organ
Designed by local architect Nikola Bašić in 2005, the Sea Organ consists of a series of differently pitched’ organ’ pipes, set into a stairway leading into the sea, which produce sounds in response to the Adriatic’s lapping waves. The random music thereby produced is gentle, soothing, an aid to contemplation; it fits in perfectly with the beautiful sunsets for which this part of the seafront is famed.
Greeting to the Sun
A few steps away from the Sea Organ, the Greeting to the Sun is another ingenious urban installation from Nikola Bašić. A circle of light sensitive cells embedded in the pavement, it absorbs energy during the daytime and emits random patterns of coloured light at night. It remains enduringly popular with visitors of all ages, especially kids, who love to run across its glowing and flashing surface.
