The Lizard Peninsula
Remote headland, beautiful bays
The jagged triangle of land reaching south into the sea off West Cornwall is called the Lizard. Edged by ink-black cliffs and dotted with quiet villages and sandy coves it’s a magical place where you can swim and hike to the cry of the gulls.
Lizard Point
At the far south of the peninsula, Lizard Point is the most southerly place in mainland Britain – standing here does feel a bit like being at the end of the world.
The headland is home to the two short white towers of the Lizard Lighthouse. Their Heritage Centre sees you trying your hand at Morse Code, listening to lighthouse keepers’ stories and gazing at the bronze doors from the Bishop Rock Lighthouse that were broken by the force of the sea. Check whether the tower has re-opened for tours.
