Minack Theatre
Open-air, cliff-side plays
At the Minack Theatre the setting steals the show. Built into a plunging cliff face, the alfresco amphitheatre has a backdrop of the horizon and a swirling sea.
The indomitable Rowena Cade and her gardener, Billy Rawlings, started building the Minack by hand back in 1930. It took her the rest of her life to complete. The first play – appropriately enough – was the Tempest. The venue now stages around 200 shows a year.
You can tour the site, take in the views and explore the museum. For a really memorable experience try to see a show. Although however good the play is, moonrises and basking sharks sometimes upstage the actors.
