Saunton Sands
A breathtaking, unspoilt beach
Saunton Sands is absolutely vast. A 3.5 mile strip of wind-buffeted sand. Cafes, shops and families cluster around the northern car park. But further out, even on busy days, you’re guaranteed your own stretch of beach.
Saunton Sands faces into the Atlantic swell – from the headlands above lines of breakers can often be seen rolling towards the shore.
Braunton Burrows
Behind the beach is Braunton Burrows. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is one of Britain’s biggest dune systems.
During WWII it was used to train 10,000 American GIs in the run up to the D Day Landings in Normandy. Walking routes snake past reminders of that era, including dummy landing craft.
Christie Estates – which owns the Burrows – has produced this downloadable map and guide. It includes a 90 minute history and nature walk, starting from the southern Broadsands Car Park.
