Widecombe-in-the-Moor
A picture-postcard Dartmoor village
Widecombe is firmly on the Dartmoor tourist honeypot map. But it’s still charming – especially if you visit at the beginning or end of the day.
Ancient houses, cafes and gift shops frame a pint sized village green where Dartmoor ponies come to graze. Of the village’s brace of pubs, the pick is the Rugglestone Inn – a 200m walk from the centre
St Pancras Church
With a soaring 37m tower, 14th century St Pancras church is known as the Cathedral of the Moor and was built on the proceeds of the local tin mining industry.
Inside look out for the panel describing a 1638 lightening strike – said to be the work of the Devil – which killed four and injured dozens more.
Walks
Widecome is also the start point for our 8-mile Widecombe –Hamel Down HIke.
