Lynton & Lynmouth
Pretty villages in a wooded gorge
The twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth sit in the folds of a steep valley between precipitous cliffs.
Supremely scenic, they offer a wealth of places to sleep and dine, and have sights ranging from fabulous rock formations to a Victorian cliff railway.
Lynmouth
Cottages frame Lymouth’s pretty harbour and riverside – many are now souvenir shops, cafes and pubs. The boutique Bath Hotel, with its quirky Ancient Mariner is nearby.
The National Park Visitor Centre on the Esplanade is an excellent source of information. The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway is alongside. Hop aboard for a ride on a tiny 1880s carriage as its surges 862ft up the cliff face propelled by water power.
