Barbican
Historic buildings, shops & pubs
Plymouth’s Barbican district gives a glimpse of how the city looked before 1920s and 1950s slum clearances and the Blitz of WWII.
Here 16th century houses line cobbled streets and narrow lanes called “Opes” – short for ‘opening’. These fan out from a central strip lined with pubs, cafes and independent shops. The old harbour stretches out alongside.
Sights
At one end sits the Mayflower Steps – a Portland stone arch framed by British and American flags. It marks the approximate departure point of the Pilgrim Fathers who left Plymouth, England in 1620 aboard the Mayflower and set up a colony in Plymouth, Massachusets. That story is told with all its complexity in the city’s innovative museum, The Box.
