Plymouth Hoe

Memorials, parks & wide sea views

Plymouth Hoe

Plymouth Hoe is the wide grassy headland that overlooks the broad waters of Plymouth Sound. This is where locals love to relax, stroll and play. The views from here stretch from pocket-sized Drake’s Island and Mount Edgcumbe Country Park on the right, to Plymouth Breakwater, 2.5 miles out to sea.

Sights

The 72ft, red and white candy striped Smeaton’s Tower dominates the Hoe. This former lighthouse used to be set on the Eddystone Reef, 9 miles off shore. It was dismantled brick by brick in the 1880s and then largely re-erected here. Check to see whether access to the tower and the balcony at the top has resumed.
